Therapeutic Approaches

Why are there several different therapeutic approaches? Every person will resonate and respond better to different styles.

We work from several modalities to personalize your therapeutic EXPERIENCE tailored to what you need.

EMOTIONALLY focused couples therapy.

EFCT is rooted in research on love as an attachment bond. EFCT is attachment based and conceptualizes the negative and rigid interaction patterns that distress couple relationships in terms of emotional disconnection and insecure attachment. Change in EFCT can occur from insight and the formulation and expression of new emotional experiences that transforms the nature of the interactions as it pertains to attachment needs and emotions. This approach creates a more secure emotional attachment between partners by mapping out the negative cycle that continues to occur so that a new, healthy and fun dance can be created.

Nonviolent communication.

NVC is not a technique to end disagreements, but rather a method designed to increase empathy and compassion. It provides a framework and set of skills to sharpen awareness of language so that you and your partner can express what really matters, and also hear what really matters. It involves empathic communication whereby we can attune ourselves to both our own and other people’s real needs. This is done by expressing our feelings and needs with clarity and self-responsibility, listening to others’ feelings and needs with compassion and empathy, and facilitate mutually beneficial outcomes for all individuals involved.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

CBT explores the links between thoughts, emotions and behavior. The focus is primarily on moving forward in time to develop more effective ways of coping with life. It aims to alleviate distress by helping you develop more adaptive cognitions and behaviors. Problems could be arising from learned patterns of unhelpful behavior and faulty or unhelpful ways of thinking. CBT strategies include learning to recognize one’s distortions in thinking that are creating problems, and then to reevaluate them in light of reality, using problem-solving skills to cope with difficult situations, and learning to develop a greater sense of confidence in one’s own abilities.

Holistic Therapy.

HT refers to a school of thought in therapy that attempts to address an individual as a whole person rather than as someone who is sick, just has psychological issues, or as being separated into different components. HT is often referred to as body-centered psychotherapy. It is an integrative type of therapy that combines aspects of traditional talk therapy and non-traditional approaches, including somatic processing, breath therapy, and meditation to help the person as a whole. Rather than focusing on a narrow problem, HT considers mental, physical, and spiritual factors that influence a person's well-being and seeks to help people heal and thrive on a deeper level.

Gottman Method Couples Therapy.

The goals of GMCT are to disarm conflicting verbal communication; increase intimacy, respect, and affection; remove barriers that create a feeling of stagnancy; and create a heightened sense of empathy and understanding within the context of the relationship. Interventions used are research-based and grounded in the Sound Relationship House theory, which specifies nine elements of a healthy relationship. GMCT is unique in its focus on perpetual versus resolvable conflicts. Understanding this difference is part of how this form of therapy can help couples positively change their relationship.
